Immediate Work Opportunity: Help Highland Recover From the Storm
Aug 15, 2026

Union Siblings,

The Town of Highland reached out directly to USW Local 7-1 to make our locked-out members aware of an immediate temporary employment opportunity supporting the ongoing storm cleanup and recovery effort.

A storm cleanup contractor working in Highland will hold a hiring fair tomorrow, Sunday, August 16th at 10:00 AM at the Highland Public Works Building.

The Town contacted Local 7-1 because they know we have members who are currently locked out and may be available to step in and help the community during this emergency. Highland residents are especially encouraged to respond, but this opportunity is being shared with all Local 7-1 members who are interested and available.

Job Details

  • Pay: $12.00 per hour
  • Overtime: Paid after 40 hours
  • Start: Immediately
  • Duration: Temporary — the work will last as long as storm restoration and cleanup efforts require
  • Openings: Approximately 10 initially, with the possibility of increasing to as many as 30 positions

This is not a manual labor position. The work will primarily involve monitoring and documenting truck loads using an iPad and camera as debris and storm materials are removed.

Interested Members — Please Respond Today

Please email president@usw7-1.com with your:

Name and phone number

Email is strongly preferred.

If you do not have access to email, call the Union Hall at 219-659-1181 and leave a voicemail with your name and phone number.

Tonight, Local 7-1 will provide the Town of Highland with a list of the members who have responded so they know who from our membership to expect at tomorrow morning’s hiring fair.

For that reason, if you are interested, please contact us before the end of today so we can make sure your name is included on that list.

Anyone interested must be present at the hiring fair tomorrow at 10:00 AM and must be prepared to begin working immediately.

Throughout this lockout, our members have seen tremendous support from Highland and communities throughout Northwest Indiana. Right now, those same communities are facing an enormous cleanup and recovery effort.

This gives our members an opportunity to earn some temporary income while also stepping up to help a community that has stood with us.

If you are available and interested, we strongly encourage you to respond today. This is a chance for Local 7-1 members to help Highland get back on its feet while demonstrating once again what solidarity and community look like in action.

In Solidarity,

USW Local 7-1 Board of Directors
